The United Methodist Conference selected HagerSmith Design to lead a “green” design build team for their new corporate offices located in Garner, NC.. HagerSmith provided complete architectural, interior and site design services from programming and master planning through construction administration. Sustainability was important to UMC ultimately resulting in the LEED Certification for the project. Key to the client was a site design that worked well for their day to day staff and also functioned for the occasional group meetings held at the facility. HagerSmith master planned the site to accommodate overflow parking on non-paved surfaces in keeping with their desire to remain “green” and to be cost conscious. The 32,000 square foot two story building sits toward the rear of their site with a long winding drive leading to the entrance. While offering some identity from Highway 70, a substantial buffer was maintained to buffer road noise and maintain the forested character that brought them to the site many years ago. The building was designed and constructed using cost effective concrete tilt panel construction paired with brick overlay detailing. Careful consideration was given to the overall building design and material selection to maximize energy conservation.
