HagerSmith Design to rehabilitate Wright Brothers Memorial Visitor Center

National Park Service Selects Raleigh Based Architecture Firm

Raleigh, N.C., August 19, 2015

Jamie Loyack, Principal at HagerSmith Design, has announced that the architecture firm has been selected to lead upgrades to the Visitor Center at the historic Wright Brothers National Memorial. Wilbur and Orville Wright were self-taught engineers and inventors with a dream. The two brothers held their revolutionary scientific experiment of teaching the world how to fly, which changed the world forever as we know it.

Constructed in 1959, the Visitor Center for Wright Brothers Memorial is a significant example of the Philadelphia School of Modernism and a prominent contribution of the Mission 66 National Park Service construction effort.  Decades of continued exposure to a harsh coastal climate have taken their toll on this iconic North Carolina structure.

In 2012, HagerSmith Design was contracted by the National Park Service to carry out a comprehensive investigation of the building’s structure, fabric and systems and to prepare a program and schematic design for a substantial renovation of this National Historic Landmark. This summer of 2015, the National Park Service has once again retained HagerSmith Design to move forward with design development and construction document phases for a complete rehabilitation.  The project will be pursuing a USGBC LEED Gold certification. Once unveiled, it will be an exciting reminder of the innovative culture that represents the people of North Carolina and our country.

The firm recently completed an upgrade of their own, revamping their website. The updated website helps to showcase their diverse portfolio and skill sets. You can visit and learn more about HagerSmith at www.hagersmith.com.
