The Walnut Hill Cotton Gin (circa 1840 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places) was purchased with a much deteriorated exterior and significant structural damage. Its adaptive re-use as a residence and studio space was guided by the Secretary of the Interior’s Guidelines for Rehabilitation, the desire for an open-plan loft living/working space and the goal of implementing sustainable design principles. The aesthetic maximizes exposure of the hand hewn timber framing, emphasizes the openness of the structure, and introduces new elements using modern industrial materials.
