As part of the development of a new state park, the NC Division of Parks & Recreation hired HagerSmith to design interim facilities for the park in and adjacent to the surviving 1940s Washington Mills employee recreation area. Existing facilities included buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright associate Antonin Raymond. The program consisted of preserving and restoring the existing large Picnic Shelter and Barbecue Shelter, providing access to the upper site area, rehabilitating the existing caretaker’s bungalow for a Contact Station, rehabilitating the existing garage as a maintenance facility, providing new restrooms, and providing new parking and utilities for the upper site.
