The park in Raleigh is an existing 38 acre neighborhood park that was developed in 1965. The park has a number of recreational elements and programs that serve the Southeast Raleigh community which include a community center, picnic shelters, an outdoor swimming pool, outdoor basketball court, a little league baseball field, an adult softball field, two playgrounds and eight tennis courts.
To accommodate the demand for additional tennis courts in the Southeast Raleigh community, this park was a logical location for additional courts. The ability to add more tennis courts to the existing (8) tennis court complex will allow expanded use and space for the City of Raleigh tennis community including increased league play, drop-in play, adult and youth clinics and the opportunity to host larger tennis tournaments and events.
Based on public input and community feedback, a concept plan was developed that minimized the impacts to the existing park programs and elements by locating the proposed tennis courts north of the existing 8 court complex. Keeping the courts adjacent to the existing complex and parking lot gives the opportunity to create a larger intact tennis complex that is well suited for instruction, league play and hosting larger tennis events.
